Valencia Legend: Corberan Should Not Have Started the Season as Head Coach

According to Super Deporte, Valencia legend Fernando Gomez recently gave an interview in which he discussed the club's current difficulties, head coach Corberan's situation, and captain Gaya's future. He stated that Valencia's current problems are not a short-term issue, but rather structural problems accumulated over many years.

Fernando Gomez believes that Valencia's repeated narrow escapes from relegation in recent seasons have instead created an undeserved sense of calm within the club.

"There are too many structural problems, and they cannot be solved quickly, but the fact is that many issues could have been avoided earlier," he said. "It was precisely because the relegation problem was solved season after season that we developed a sense of calm that was neither deserved nor reasonable."

Speaking about the club's ownership issue, Fernando was even more direct. He believes Valencia's major shareholder should have stepped away long ago, while the management responsible for sporting matters must also take responsibility.

"I think the club's major shareholder should have stopped being the major shareholder a long time ago," Fernando said. "I believe the professionals managing sporting matters could have done a better job from the beginning, even after receiving so much funding."

At the same time, he criticized the club for lacking sufficient transparency, saying that the management should explain the reasons behind important decisions to the fans.

"No one at the club explains to the fans why these decisions are made," he said. "There is no sporting director who can occasionally hold a meeting and explain why things are decided this way."

Fernando was also clear in his assessment of Corberan. He said that although he does not support frequent changes of head coach, his personal view is that Corberan should not have started the season in charge of the team.

"I think Corberan should not have started coaching this season, but since he has already started, you should not give him another one-year contract extension."

Fernando believes the club's decision to renew Corberan's contract at that time was too hasty. "You should not give him another year because he has not earned it yet. If he proves himself during the rest of this season, then giving him another year would also be possible."

However, he also stressed that he does not want Corberan to fail, because if the coach can ultimately lead the team to success, Valencia will still be the beneficiary.

Fernando also discussed captain Gaya's future. Gaya currently has one year remaining on his contract with Valencia, and the club has already offered him a renewal proposal. The Valencia legend believes Gaya needs to carefully consider his career and should make his decision based more on sporting factors rather than financial considerations.

"When you have been here for many years and things are not going well, fans always see the same faces, and sometimes they can become tired," Fernando said. "I think the main reason behind his decision must be more about sporting factors rather than financial ones."

Regarding this season's objectives, Fernando did not set overly high expectations. In his view, given Valencia's current situation, successfully avoiding relegation would already be enough.

"As long as they can avoid relegation, I will be satisfied. I will not ask for more from them... and I think that is already very simple."
