Real Madrid and PSG Suffer First League Defeats of the Season on Same Day, Mbappe's Stoppage-Time Penalty Saved

Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain both suffered their first domestic league defeats of the season on Friday. Mbappe saw his stoppage-time penalty saved, while PSG surrendered their lead in Ligue 1.

Real Madrid lost 0-1 away to Real Betis, marking Jose Mourinho's first defeat since returning as head coach.

PSG lost 1-2 at home to Monaco. On the same day, the club announced that head coach Luis Enrique had agreed to extend his contract until 2030.

Real Madrid struggled in Seville

Betis pulled off an upset victory over Real Madrid, with new signing Irish striker Troy Parrott scoring after heading in the rebound from a Betis teammate's header saved by Courtois.

Real Madrid's best chance to equalize came in stoppage time, when Vinicius was brought down by Natan inside the box to win a penalty. However, Betis goalkeeper Alvaro Valles saved Mbappe's spot kick, continuing his excellent performance on the night.

Real Madrid had previously won three consecutive La Liga matches. Betis had just suffered a surprising 2-5 defeat to Levante after a two-match winning streak.

Mbappe had scored four goals in his previous two matches, but the French star struggled at La Cartuja. In addition to missing the penalty, he failed to convert a fine pass from Vinicius in the first half, with both follow-up shots blocked by Betis defenders.

"My team played a great game, sometimes you lose and you don't know why," Mourinho said. "We controlled the match, with many attacks and chances. If it had ended in a draw we would have been disappointed, so you can imagine how we feel after losing."

PSG suffered defeat after announcing a new contract

Marquinhos gave PSG the lead in the 31st minute and it looked like the team was heading toward its first win, but Monaco completed a comeback through goals from Flavio Nazinho in the 58th minute and Stanis Idumbo in the 72nd minute.

Monaco lead the Ligue 1 table with three consecutive wins and are the only team to have won all of their first three matches.

PSG drew 2-2 with Rennes and Lille in their first two rounds, and also lost 0-1 to Lens last month, missing out in the French Super Cup.

The league defeat came several hours after PSG announced the contract extension.
