Lyon director: Not sure what will happen with Tagliafico next, happy he is still here

Lyon sporting director Matthieu-Louis Jean said the club is generally satisfied with its summer recruitment, but Tagliafico's future remains uncertain.

Speaking about the summer transfer operations, Matthieu-Louis Jean said: "We could have done better. We sold players for around 70 million euros, which is already quite considerable. The outcome could have been better, but we are especially satisfied with the signings. Tonight we can still see a complete squad. We worked together with the recruitment department and Paulo Fonseca, hoping to have a more complete squad than last season, especially by strengthening rotation options. We are better prepared now." He made the comments after the 3-1 win over Auxerre.

The new signings played important roles in the match, with examples including Baher and Atikame. Matthieu-Louis Jean also discussed the failure to sign AC Milan midfielder Youssouf Fofana. Fofana had been considered likely to join Lyon, but eventually moved to Sevilla. Matthieu-Louis Jean said: "We could not complete the deal because of financial issues, especially regarding the total wage bill. We wanted to find a player with strong physical attributes who could break through defensive lines, and his arrival would have improved the team's strength."

Finally, he spoke about Nicolas Tagliafico. The Argentine full-back was once close to joining Atletico Madrid, but the deal was eventually cancelled. Matthieu-Louis Jean said: "This matter is quite special. Two top clubs wanted him, namely Juventus and Atletico Madrid. We originally thought he would join Atletico Madrid. I am not entirely sure what will happen with Tagliafico next, as there are still some parts of the transfer market open. He is still with us at the moment, and we are happy about that."
