Gakpo once again became the most influential player in Liverpool's attack. Away against Ipswich, he helped Isak complete a brace and created an opportunity for substitute Barcola in the second half. Just one week earlier, he had also been close to joining Manchester City.

Three minutes changed the match

Gakpo Proves Himself Again: How Will Iraola Use His Position?

Isak enjoyed a confidence-boosting night at Portman Road. In just three minutes of the first half, the Sweden international breached Ipswich's defense twice, completing his first brace since joining Liverpool and scoring his fifth and sixth Premier League goals after moving from Newcastle for £125 million. Manager Iraola said after the match: "As long as Alex stays healthy and in form, I believe he can continue producing numbers."

Gakpo's attacking performance was equally important. He scored in the opening match against Newcastle, and in this game he created the conditions for Isak's goal and Barcola's introduction. In one of Liverpool's most competitive attacking positions, the Netherlands international once again proved his value.

Almost joined Manchester City

Just one week ago, Gakpo was close to moving to Manchester City. But Iraola made his position clear after the match: "I have no doubts about Cody. He had a very good pre-season and has continued that excellent form at the start of the season, consistently producing numbers. He knows how much we value him, and I have a very high opinion of him."

Iraola also highlighted one of Gakpo's qualities: his willingness to take risks. He praised the Dutchman for quickly choosing forward passes instead of making "safe" sideways or backward passes. "This is the process we want — when we win the ball back, we have to look forward. That is the best moment to find spaces between defenders and create chances for the striker."

Consistent output in the opening three matches

Including this match, Gakpo has recorded one goal and two assists in Liverpool's first three Premier League games of the new season. He scored in the opener against Newcastle, provided an assist against Nottingham Forest last round, and directly contributed to two goals in this match. In Liverpool's most competitive attacking position, the Netherlands international has shown with three consecutive consistent performances that he should not be left on the bench.

It is worth noting that two years ago, also at Ipswich, Slot, Klopp's successor, earned his first victory as Liverpool manager, which was also a 2-0 win. That season ultimately ended with the Premier League title. Iraola will of course not talk about winning the title at this stage, but this victory at least created a clear dividing line after the team's chaotic opening two matches.
