Gakpo's Strong Form Creates Starting Challenge for Liverpool New Signing Bakayoko

Liverpool signed Bradley Barcola from Paris Saint-Germain during the summer transfer window, and the 23-year-old French forward was expected to make a major impact. However, former Liverpool defender and current Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher believes that as long as Gakpo continues his current outstanding form, it will be very difficult for Barcola to earn consistent playing time.

In the Premier League opening-round match against Ipswich Town, Barcola made only a brief substitute appearance. Dutch international Gakpo, meanwhile, continued his excellent start to the season — he has impressed in each of the first three league matches, scoring important goals and creating multiple chances. In yesterday's match, both of Liverpool's goals were directly created through his involvement.

Gakpo responds to doubts with his performances

In fact, Gakpo's performance last season could only be described as average, and there were calls at one point for Liverpool to bring in a stronger replacement. During this summer's transfer window, Manchester City and Tottenham both showed strong interest in him, but Liverpool refused to let him leave. Looking at the current situation, that decision appears to have been a wise one — Gakpo has repaid the club's trust with three consecutive outstanding performances.

When Barcola joined, many believed he would directly replace Gakpo in the starting lineup. The reality, however, is that the Dutchman has not only kept his place but has also raised the standard of competition. Carragher pointed out that if Gakpo can maintain this level every week, Barcola will face a significant challenge during his early period at Liverpool.

Healthy competition could benefit the Reds

For Liverpool and manager Iraola, this competition for positions is not necessarily a bad thing. Gakpo's resurgence combined with Barcola's arrival gives the team more options in attack. The manager clearly hopes players can maintain a high level of performance, and internal competition can bring out the best in everyone.

The next questions are whether Gakpo can maintain this form throughout the season and whether Barcola can prove himself with limited opportunities. At least for now, Liverpool's summer signing has not fully delivered his immediate-impact value, but the positive effects brought by competition within the squad are already becoming visible.
