Aston Villa Hold Chelsea to 1-1 Away Draw, Earn First WSL Point in Meetings Between the Two Teams

On September 5 Beijing time, in the opening round of the Women's Super League, Aston Villa drew 1-1 away at Chelsea.

In the 11th minute, Lauren James capitalized on an error in Villa's defense, shifted the ball onto her left foot and fired a powerful shot into the top corner of the goal to give Chelsea the lead.

Chelsea continued to hold the advantage afterward. Aggie Beever-Jones, making her 100th appearance for the club, saw her shot saved by Okuma, and Nusken later fired over the bar. Chelsea went into halftime with a one-goal lead.

Villa improved after the break. In the 55th minute, Amalie Vangsgaard met Grant's cross and sent her near-post effort wide. Chelsea then almost extended their lead, but Keira Walsh's long-range shot struck the underside of the crossbar and bounced away.

In the 79th minute, Chelsea's penalty area became chaotic. Noelle Maritz reacted quickest, and her close-range shot deflected off Borman and went into the net. It was recorded as an own goal, allowing Villa to equalize.

Chelsea pushed forward with full force in the final stages. In stoppage time, James had another chance, but Okuma made a save to tip the ball over the crossbar.

The draw meant Chelsea failed to start this season's WSL campaign with a victory, while Villa earned their first WSL point against Chelsea.
