Ten Years of Mane's Transfer: A Reference Case for Liverpool's Recruitment Strategy

Ten years ago this week, Sadio Mane scored in his home debut for Liverpool, helping the team defeat Premier League champions Leicester City 4-1. It was the second of the 120 goals he scored for Liverpool. In 269 appearances, he won almost every major trophy, leaving the club as a legend, while the transfer deal nearly allowed Liverpool to recover their entire investment.

Related to Mane's success, the data surrounding his transfer should become a case study for Richard Hughes' successor—the person overseeing Liverpool's transfer strategy. Even when inflation is taken into account, a good deal looks like this: signing a 24-year-old player for £30 million, seeing him leave at age 30 with a collection of medals, and receiving a transfer fee of up to £35 million.

The Senegalese player ultimately did not generate a profit, because he struggled to adapt at Bayern Munich, moved to Saudi Arabia's Al Nassr a year later, and has remained there since.

This has led some people to believe Liverpool could have kept Mane for longer. When Mane left, his 23 goals in the 2021-22 season were the second-highest tally of his six seasons at the club. However, during much of his final season at Liverpool, he was deployed through the middle rather than on the left wing, where he had previously been more effective.

This decision was partly due to Roberto Firmino's influence beginning to decline. At the same time, Liverpool had already found Mane's replacement. Similar to Mane, Luis Diaz joined from Porto and eventually moved to Munich as a Premier League champion, except this time Liverpool made a considerable profit.

This series of moves is difficult to replicate, but Liverpool should still use it as a reference. Diaz's departure currently appears to be a poor decision because he has performed well at Bayern, while there is no one at Anfield to replace him, and the team has struggled for various reasons since the summer of 2025.
