With 11 Goal Contributions, Philadelphia Union 16-Year-Old Star Sullivan Breaks Adu's MLS Record

According to ESPN, Philadelphia Union 16-year-old star Cavan Sullivan scored in his third consecutive MLS match and also broke an MLS record previously held by teenage prodigy Freddy Adu.

On Saturday, Philadelphia Union hosted CF Montreal. In the 75th minute, Sullivan calmly finished with his left foot to help the team defeat the opponent 2-0.

With this goal, Sullivan's total goals and assists this season reached 11, making him the 16-year-old player with the most goal contributions in a single MLS season in league history, surpassing Adu's record set in 2005. In addition, he became the youngest player in MLS history to record a goal or assist in five consecutive matches.

While celebrating the milestone, Sullivan imitated LeBron James' iconic "powder toss" celebration after the player had just joined Philadelphia.

Across all competitions this season, including the Leagues Cup and the CONCACAF Champions Cup, Sullivan has made 27 appearances, contributing 7 goals and 11 assists.

This is not the first time Sullivan has broken a record held by Adu. Two years ago, he made his first-team debut for Philadelphia Union at the age of 14 years and 293 days, surpassing Adu to become the youngest first-team appearance maker in MLS history.

Several months before that, Philadelphia Union signed Sullivan to the highest-value homegrown player contract in MLS history. ESPN reported at the time that the contract included an agreement for Sullivan to transfer to Premier League giants Manchester City after turning 18.

Like Adu 20 years ago, Sullivan has received widespread attention for being regarded as a future star of the United States men's national team, and many people have called for him to be selected by the U.S. national team coached by Mauricio Pochettino.

Sullivan has so far represented the United States youth national teams up to the U18 level.
