Before the match against Inter Milan, Napoli sporting director Giovanni Manna explained the expected recovery timeline: “It takes 28 days to regain eligibility to play, because he will take anticoagulant medication that is prohibited. The player needs to rest for the first two weeks, and afterwards he can resume non-contact sporting activities.”

Manna also urged caution when assessing the actual recovery time: “The recovery period is like this. Of course, the player could also be behind in his condition, or some complications could occur, but we will have to see how things develop.” Napoli hope to use the international break to reduce the number of matches McTominay misses as much as possible.

Manna also explained why the club chose to arrange the surgery at this time: “The reason we scheduled the surgery for this moment is that it coincides with the break. We hope he can return in October, when there will still be nine matches.” Napoli hope to have McTominay back during the busiest part of the schedule, but the specific arrangements will still depend on his recovery in the weeks after surgery.
