Wataru Endo Discusses Iraola's Tactics: Focus on No. 6 Defensive Role, Style Better Suits My Strengths

According to Japanese media outlet Qoly, Liverpool Japanese midfielder Wataru Endo recently held a discussion with Liverpool Women's player Fuka Nagano and talked about his role in the team after new manager Iraola took charge.

The 33-year-old Endo has entered his fourth season with Liverpool. In his first season after joining the club, he was heavily trusted by Klopp, but during Slot's two seasons in charge, he was more often used as a defensive reinforcement in the final stages of matches, with his playing time significantly reduced.

After Iraola took over Liverpool this season, Endo was included in the squad for all of the first three Premier League rounds but has yet to make an appearance. However, Endo believes Iraola's tactical approach is actually well suited to his characteristics.

Endo said: "From the perspective of the manager's style, he places great emphasis on the importance of the holding midfielder's defensive role, especially the defensive contribution of the No. 6 position. He also often emphasizes this point in team meetings."

Endo also said that as Liverpool's squad has changed, with more young players joining and some senior players leaving, his experience could also become something the team needs.

No matter which position I play, my defensive ability and experience should be what the team expects from me. I think I can contribute in positions such as centre-back or holding midfielder."

The report stated that Iraola currently mainly uses a 4-2-3-1 formation and places great importance on the team's defensive performance. With players such as Andy Robertson and Konate leaving, along with young players joining the squad, Endo may take on more of a role as an experienced versatile player capable of filling multiple defensive positions.

As Champions League and League Cup matches begin one after another, Liverpool's fixture schedule will become increasingly demanding, and Endo is also expected to receive more opportunities to play.
