Burnley officially announced that former England international Jamie Vardy has joined the club as a free agent, with both sides signing a one-season contract.

The 39-year-old forward won the Premier League title with Leicester City in 2016. After the end of last season, he left Italian club Cremonese and became a free agent.

Burnley head coach Nicky Hayen said: "His experience and leadership are invaluable to our squad, and we believe he can have a significant impact on our season. Jamie has a proven track record, and we look forward to seeing him in the claret shirt."

Burnley were relegated from England's top flight last season.

In his joining statement, Vardy said: "This club has genuine football history and passionate fans, and they deserve a team that represents them and this town. I can't wait to step onto the pitch and help the team move in the right direction."
