Four Substitution Windows Violation? Crystal Palace Women Beat Everton as Refereeing Team Suspended

Crystal Palace Women defeated Everton 1-0 in the Women's Super League (WSL), but the victory sparked controversy. After the match, league officials confirmed that Crystal Palace used four substitution windows during the game, breaching the competition rule that allows a maximum of three substitution windows per match. The match officiating team has been suspended pending an investigation.

In the match, Crystal Palace Women made substitutions in the 62nd, 83rd, 90th and 97th minutes. Under WSL rules, each team is allowed a maximum of five substitute players per match, but substitutions can only be made across three windows. Crystal Palace brought on forward Kirsty Howat in the 97th minute, which came during the seventh minute of a 13-minute stoppage-time period, and this substitution triggered the rule violation.

Refereeing team suspended, investigation launched

According to informed sources, referee Megan Wilson and her officiating team will not appear on the referee appointments list for the next WSL and WSL 2 rounds. The new round of appointments will be announced on Monday evening Beijing time. The WSL said in a statement: "We can confirm that there was a breach of competition rules in the Crystal Palace versus Everton match. Crystal Palace used a fourth substitution opportunity at the fourth stoppage in the match, while the rules allow a maximum of three substitution windows per game. We will work with both clubs and Pro Ref to conduct an investigation and provide updates when appropriate."

Pro Ref is the newly renamed organization in England responsible for overseeing refereeing matters in the Premier League, Championship, WSL and FA Cup, and was formerly known as PGMOL. A key focus of the investigation is whether the officiating team failed to properly verify the substitution situation.

Promoted side earns first win after return, but victory is overshadowed

As a promoted team this season, Crystal Palace Women secured victory in their first match back in the WSL through Lexi Lloyd-Smith's first-half goal. The win was originally a moment to celebrate, but the substitution controversy has reduced the significance of the three points. The league will next review the match report and video footage to determine whether additional punishment, such as a points deduction or fine, should be imposed on Crystal Palace.

For Everton, it remains unclear whether the result of the defeat will change because of the opponent's rule violation. Under usual practice, an illegal substitution does not directly alter the match result, but the punishment decision still needs to wait until the investigation is complete. Crystal Palace have not issued a public response on the matter, and Everton have also not commented on the investigation progress.
