Arsenal and Man City Monitor PSG Defender Pacho as New Contract Complicates January Transfer

Arsenal and Manchester City are continuing to monitor Paris Saint-Germain defender William Pacho, with both Premier League giants considering future reinforcements for their defenses.

The 24-year-old Ecuador international has established himself as one of Europe's top left-footed center-backs since moving from Eintracht Frankfurt to PSG in 2024.

His speed, physicality and composure in possession make him particularly attractive to clubs looking to defend proactively and build attacks from the back.

However, a major development at PSG has made any potential January transfer more complicated.

Sources close to the agency industry told CaughtOffside that both Arsenal and Manchester City have prepared detailed scouting reports on Pacho and watched him in person during PSG's 2-2 draw with Lille.

Liverpool and Real Madrid had also previously monitored the Ecuadorian defender, but there have been no formal negotiations or offers at this stage.

Reports indicate that Arsenal view Pacho as another high-level left-footed defensive option, while Manchester City believe his passing ability and recovery speed fit Enzo Maresca's possession-based system.

But PSG's negotiating position has now been significantly strengthened.

Reuters confirmed that Pacho has signed a new contract running until 2031, extending his previous deal by two years.

He has also started all three of PSG's Ligue 1 matches this season, completing the full 90 minutes in each game.

Pacho would undoubtedly improve the defensive strength of most Premier League teams, but it will be extremely difficult for Arsenal and Manchester City to convince PSG to let him leave. The new contract has changed the situation—PSG no longer face any contract pressure in negotiations, and Pacho remains a regular starter under Luis Enrique. Taking him away in January would likely require a very high offer, as well as the player himself pushing for an exit.

For Arsenal, the defense was already significantly strengthened in the summer, and spending heavily on another center-back may be difficult to justify to the management. Manchester City have more tactical reasons to make a move, especially if Maresca wants an elite left-footed defender capable of progressing the ball. But realistically, a January move is more likely to remain at the stage of 'monitoring' rather than becoming a 'transfer'.
