Tottenham Official: Chris Hughton Inducted into Club Hall of Fame

Tottenham Hotspur officially announced that Chris Hughton has been inducted into the club's Hall of Fame.

Tottenham officially announced that Chris Hughton has become the latest inductee into the club's relaunched Hall of Fame.

Hughton is one of Tottenham's all-time legends, making 398 appearances in all competitions, ranking 15th on the club's all-time appearance list. He played for Tottenham from 1979 to 1990 and served the club for 25 years as a player, coach and assistant coach. In 1993, he joined Tottenham's coaching staff and worked there until 2007.

After that, Hughton managed Newcastle, Birmingham, Norwich, Brighton, Nottingham Forest and the Ghana national team. He led Newcastle and Brighton to promotion from the Championship to the Premier League.

Born in Forest Gate, Hughton completed an apprenticeship as a lift engineer at the age of 21 and officially joined Tottenham in 1979.

He quickly made his first-team debut and became an important member during the successful period under Keith Burkinshaw in the early 1980s.

Between 1981 and 1984, Hughton, like other Hall of Fame members including Steve Perryman, Paul Miller and Glenn Hoddle, featured in seven cup finals, including replays and two-legged finals. Tottenham won the FA Cup in 1981 and 1982 and lifted the UEFA Cup in 1984. Hughton also started in the 1987 FA Cup final against Coventry.

Hughton was one of football's pioneers and one of the first Black players to represent the Republic of Ireland. He made 53 appearances for Ireland and participated in the 1988 European Championship and the 1990 World Cup. In 1995, he was honored with a testimonial match at Lansdowne Road.

After leaving football, Hughton revealed in April this year that he had been diagnosed with prostate cancer a year earlier, in April 2025. He discussed his recovery last month. Hughton said: “I am one year and three or four months post-operation, and everything is going well. I have kept myself busy and my energy levels are still high. So yes, I am in very good shape, very well, and I am very happy to be here.”
