Opta Predicts Champions League Winning Chances: Arsenal, Bayern and Manchester City Top Three, Barcelona Fourth

The new Champions League season will begin on Tuesday evening, and data company Opta has predicted each team's chances of winning the title before the start. Arsenal lead the list, followed by Bayern, Manchester City in third, Barcelona in fourth, and defending champions Paris Saint-Germain in fifth.

According to the prediction, Arsenal are the biggest favorites to win the Champions League, with more than one-fifth (20.9%) of simulations showing them winning the trophy. Bayern are considered the most likely threat to Arteta's team, with the Bundesliga giants having a slightly lower title probability (19.4%) in simulations. Manchester City are another team with a title chance above 10% (12.3%).

Defending champions Paris Saint-Germain rank fifth on the list, with a 7.1% chance of winning the Champions League for three consecutive seasons.

A total of 93.8% of simulations show Arsenal reaching the knockout stage. However, Bayern have an advantage in the league phase, ranking first in that stage in all simulations with a 19.4% chance of finishing top, a probability higher than any other team, although their overall Champions League title chance is slightly lower than Arsenal's. According to Opta's power rankings, Arsenal are the strongest team in the world.

Manchester City won their first Champions League title in the 2022-23 season, and their chance of winning again this time is 12.3%. To go all the way to the final, they will need a significant improvement in performance. Among the main contenders, City's league-phase schedule is the most difficult, meaning they must perform strongly even to reach the top eight. The supercomputer still gives City an 86.9% chance of reaching the round of 16.

Before this week, two-time consecutive Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain had been the fourth favorites, but after losing 1-2 at home to Monaco last week, their title probability dropped to fifth. One possible reason is that PSG may find it difficult to maintain their previous success, with the chance of a three-peat at only 7.1%.

Barcelona have not won the Champions League since 2015, but according to supercomputer predictions, they have an 8.2% chance of lifting the trophy this season.

Real Madrid cannot be ignored in the Champions League. They have won the competition twice in the past five seasons and have claimed 15 titles in total historically. However, their current title probability is only 4.4%, mainly because they have not won any major trophies since their 2023-24 title triumph.

Liverpool also have a glorious European history and should not be underestimated. They reached three finals between the 2017-18 and 2021-22 seasons, and this season they have a 13.3% chance of reaching the final and a 6.1% chance of winning the title, higher than Real Madrid's probability.

Opta's supercomputer predicts that Manchester United have only a 3.8% chance of becoming dark horses and winning the Champions League this season, but the Red Devils also have a considerable chance of reaching the quarter-finals (37.6%) and even the semi-finals (18.4%).

Inter Milan have an 8.7% chance of reaching the final, but their 3.6% title probability indicates they are still considered one of the less likely contenders.

Aston Villa rank 10th in the title probability list, with only a 2.0% chance of winning. With several key players leaving during the summer transfer window, Villa's poor start in domestic competitions suggests they may struggle to stand out in Europe's top competition.

Borussia Dortmund (1.8%), Sporting CP (1.4%), Roma (1.3%) and Como (1.2%) are the only other teams with more than a one percent chance of winning the Champions League. The remaining 22 teams all have title probabilities below 1.0% in simulations.
