Como Extend Contract With Her Through 2027/28 Season After Breast Cancer Diagnosis

Como Women forward Roberta Picchi received a contract extension from the club after being diagnosed with breast cancer. Italian football club Como officially confirmed that it has extended Picchi’s contract as part of its “continued commitment” to her. The new deal runs until the end of the 2027/28 season.

Picchi learned of the diagnosis shortly after helping Como Women achieve a historic promotion to Italy’s top women’s football division. At that time, only a few weeks remained before the team’s first Serie A Women match of the new season. In a statement on Monday, the club said Picchi would begin treatment, with the club’s medical team providing full support and working closely with the specialist doctors responsible for her care.

The club statement also said that everyone at Como 1907 stands with Picchi. In the coming months, the club will provide her and her family with all the support they need. As part of its continued commitment, the club decided to extend her contract until the end of the 2027/28 season. Como also asked the public to respect Picchi’s privacy, allowing her to focus on treatment and recovery.

Picchi also posted her own statement on social media. The 34-year-old forward wrote: “Nothing can be taken for granted, and I feel lucky. Now it is time for me to take the field and play my own game, but I will return with even greater determination.”

Como Women’s first match after returning to Serie A will be against AC Milan on September 26. Meanwhile, Como men’s team has also performed well in recent years under head coach Cesc Fabregas. The club returned to Serie A in 2024 after 21 years away and finished 10th in its first season back in the top flight.

Last season, under Fabregas, who previously played for Arsenal and Chelsea, Como progressed further and finished fourth to qualify for the Champions League. They will play the first Champions League match in the club’s history on Thursday, hosting Bundesliga side RB Leipzig.

Como have also made a strong start this season, taking seven points from their first three Serie A matches and currently sitting fourth in the standings.
