In the first round of the Champions League league phase, Villarreal lost 2-3 away to Borussia Dortmund, suffering a cross-season run of seven consecutive Champions League defeats.
Last season, Villarreal recorded one draw and seven defeats in the Champions League league phase, finishing second from bottom and being eliminated in disappointing fashion.
The Yellow Submarine's previous Champions League appearance before this was in the 2021-22 season. Under Unai Emery, they matched the best Champions League result in club history by reaching the semifinals, where they were eliminated by Liverpool after losing both legs.
Villarreal's last Champions League victory came in the first leg of the 2021-22 season quarterfinals, when they defeated Bayern Munich 1-0. They then drew 1-1 in the second leg to advance to the semifinals.
