Ratcliffe's £500m Manchester United Reinforcement Plan Revealed: At Least Four Major Signings Next Season to Chase 150th Anniversary Title Dream

When is Manchester United the most generous? The answer is when the transfer window closes and they promote future plans! Before the summer transfer window opened, the Red Devils were considered likely to be the 'busiest' club. The result was completely different, as they became the quietest among the Premier League giants. Now that the summer window has passed, Sir Jim Ratcliffe has once again become ambitious in his public statements. English media reports say the INEOS management team has indicated that there is a reinforcement plan worth more than £500 million next year, with the goal of challenging for the Premier League title on the club's 150th anniversary in 2028.

Manchester United supporters know clearly that the club was founded in 1878 and will celebrate its 150th anniversary two years from now. Ratcliffe stated long ago that he hoped the team could win the Premier League title again before this historic moment arrived, which CEO Omar Berrada called 'Project 150'.

Ratcliffe said publicly at the time: 'The key is our trajectory of development. People need to see that we are making progress. I remember that 2028 is the 150th anniversary of the club's foundation. If our development curve can reach its peak within that timeframe and lead us to a very positive position, then we will be very satisfied.'

Since Ratcliffe acquired the club, Manchester United have followed a strategy of strengthening one area of the squad each year. In the 2025 summer window, the team completely rebuilt its attack, spending more than £220 million to sign Cunha, Mbeumo and Sesko. This year, the Red Devils rebuilt their midfield, spending £150 million to sign Andre Santos, Youri Tielemans and Carlos Baleba. The rebuilds of the forward and midfield areas have cost Manchester United a total of £370 million.

In the summer of 2027, Manchester United's plan is to strengthen the defence. This does not include the goalkeeper position, as Senne Lammens has already secured the No. 1 spot. The Daily Telegraph reports that United could bring in as many as four defenders to replace the entire back line. The back four selected by Carrick for Manchester United's match against Everton — Diogo Dalot, Harry Maguire, Lisandro Martinez and Luke Shaw — is the same ageing defensive line that was used during Ten Hag's tenure in 2022.

The newspaper's James Ducker said: 'Manchester United have completed the second phase of a three-step transfer strategy and now plan to carry out a defensive rebuild next summer. The entire reconstruction project could cost more than £500 million in total. The club could bring in two new full-backs and two new centre-backs, depending on the futures of the current players. However, there is still no widely recognised excellent player who can replace Luke Shaw this season, making this a risk. The lack of a left-back could become a problem this season.'

If the English media reports are accurate, Manchester United will spend at least £130 million on defenders next year. That amount may not be enough, because Ratcliffe's preferred left-back target Lewis Hall alone is expected to cost at least £60 million.

According to transfer expert Ben Jacobs, Manchester United have already received Hall's approval, just as they had secured Baleba's commitment 12 months before his eventual move. But Hall is not Baleba; he will first renew his contract with Newcastle United, meaning his cost will only increase rather than decrease.

Some believe that if Manchester United have a title-winning level squad for the 2027/28 season, a £500 million investment in a single transfer window might make it possible. Besides defenders, United also need to replace positions such as the backup striker role to improve competitiveness. However, given Ratcliffe's approach, this is almost impossible. If he had such determination and financial power, he should have signed new defenders this summer instead of waiting until next year. Some fans have mocked that if Carrick does not have enough players, CEO Omar Berrada and football director Jason Wilcox could be considered for the lineup, with the latter having previously been a professional player who won the Premier League with Blackburn.

In reality, Manchester United will only bring forward the plan of changing one area per year if they find players offering extremely high value for money. This was similar to the £18 million signing of Senne Lammens last summer. Unfortunately, players like the Belgian goalkeeper are rare opportunities, and the Red Devils cannot find such players every year.
