Liverpool Increasingly Satisfied with Araujo’s Loan Performance as £47m Purchase Option Looks More Appealing

Liverpool are reportedly increasingly satisfied with Ronald Araujo’s performances since he joined on loan from Barcelona in the summer, with the Uruguayan centre-back building a stronger case for a permanent transfer next year.

The 27-year-old Araujo arrived at Anfield on a season-long loan after Barcelona approved his departure, with Liverpool holding an approximately £47 million purchase option. The deal was initially viewed as a low-risk solution to address defensive depth issues, but Araujo’s early performances suggest he could be much more than a temporary reinforcement.

According to Diario Sport, Liverpool are pleased with Araujo’s integration under Andoni Iraola and have already begun viewing the defender’s purchase option positively. Araujo’s versatility has quickly become one of his biggest strengths—he can play both centre-back and right-back, allowing Iraola to adjust defensive setups based on opponents.

This was especially evident in Liverpool’s 2-0 win over Ipswich Town on September 5. Araujo started at right-back ahead of Jeremie Frimpong and delivered an impressive defensive performance. Liverpool.com reported that Araujo won 9 of his 10 duels, succeeded in all 6 aerial duels, and made 7 clearances during the match.

Virgil van Dijk also praised Araujo’s ability to cover multiple defensive positions after the match.

£47 million could prove to be excellent value

Liverpool should not rush into a permanent transfer decision based on only a few matches, but the early signs are certainly very positive. Araujo provides Iraola’s squad with what it previously needed: defensive aggression, aerial dominance, and experience in the highest-level matches.

His ability to fill the right-back role is particularly valuable because Frimpong offers a greater attacking threat but leaves more defensive space behind him. Against more physically demanding opponents, Araujo can give Liverpool a more reliable one-on-one defensive presence.

A £47 million transfer fee is not insignificant, especially for a defender who has had injury issues in the past, making his availability throughout the season crucial. However, if he stays healthy and maintains his current level, Liverpool may struggle to find a defender with the same experience and versatility for significantly less money.
