September 9: National Team Full-Back Rebuild Over Two Years: Zhang Linpeng Fades, Three 21-Year-Olds Rise, Mao Weijie Starts 22 Games After Forward Conversion

Two years ago, the only option for selecting China's national team full-backs was to push Zhang Linpeng from the flank into central defense and fill the position by moving players from other roles.

Today, three young full-backs with an average age of 21.7 are simultaneously on the national team candidate list, nearly eight years younger on average than the previous cycle.

This change was not the result of a single youth selection program, but the convergence of three completely different development paths into the national team's flanks at the same time.

Hu Hetao's starting point was Chengdu Rongcheng's three-center-back system.

In the 2024 season, Xu Zhengyuan moved him away from the traditional full-back role and required him to both defend and push forward as a wing-back.

This adjustment directly changed his statistical profile, with both average tackles and key passes increasing, and his coverage in attack and defense clearly exceeding the previous average level for players in the same Chinese Super League position.

By the 2026 World Cup Asian qualifiers' third round, he had become the national team's most frequently appearing player in this position, starting all six appearances.

Yang Xi followed a different path.

He came through Espanyol's youth system, returned to the Chinese Super League in February 2026 by joining Qingdao West Coast, entered the league's top group for his flank-to-flank ability in his first season, then transferred to Shanghai Port midway through the season and became a key flank player for the team.

He has made two appearances in national team friendlies, but his international A-level match experience is the least among the three.

Mao Weijie's story is the most distinctive.

He was originally a forward and was converted into a left-back by Dalian Yingbo head coach Li Guoxu.

Li Guoxu said after a match, "Changing Mao Weijie from a forward to a full-back was a decision made by our entire coaching staff after long-term observation. His attacking awareness is something ordinary full-backs do not have, and his improvement on defense has exceeded our expectations."

"The result of the conversion is that in the 2026 season he started 22 consecutive matches, contributed one goal and three assists, and ranked among the top three in the Chinese Super League in tackles and clearances among players in the same position.

The common point among the three players is age.

The 23-year-old Hu Hetao, 21-year-old Yang Xi, and 21-year-old Mao Weijie all gained stable playing time under the U23 policy framework.

In the 2026 Chinese Super League season, each team is required to have at least one U23 player on the field throughout the match, and this rule objectively created more opportunities for young full-backs.

However, the rule is only an external condition. The key reason the three players emerged together was that their club head coaches actively adjusted their selection and usage approaches.

Another side of the situation needs to be considered.

The three players have fewer than 15 international A-level appearances combined and have not yet experienced a true high-pressure test in top Asian competitions.

In the latter part of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers' third round, young national team full-backs accounted for more than 70 percent of appearances, but mistakes such as conceding penalties from the flanks and losing defensive positions still occurred.

While Hu Hetao frequently joins the attack, his defensive positioning is not always stable when facing fast counterattacks.

These weaknesses can be covered by systems in the Chinese Super League, but whether they can be hidden at continental level remains unanswered.

In the previous national team cycle, the average age of full-backs was 29.3, and U23 players accounted for less than one-tenth of appearances.

Zhang Linpeng played from his early twenties into his thirties, and there was never a player of the same age group who could truly succeed him.

Compared with now, the simultaneous emergence of three players into the national team's view is indeed the deepest talent pool at this position in nearly a decade.

However, depth and quality are two different things.

The fact that the three players have secured starting roles in the Chinese Super League does not mean they will carry the same responsibilities in Asian Cup-level matches.

From a squad structure perspective, Zhang Linpeng is gradually fading from the starting full-back role and may move toward central defense or a transition into retirement.

After Feng Boxuan joined Dalian Yingbo as a free agent in July 2026, he received more rotation opportunities alongside Mao Weijie and provided defensive experience guidance to the young player who converted from forward.

National team coach Ivan Jovanovic also said publicly that Hu Hetao's running ability and forward surges as a full-back are qualities the national team needs, and that upcoming friendlies will provide more opportunities for young wide players.

The real test is not friendly matches.

The 2027 Asian Cup finals will be the first time this group of young full-backs receives an official test in a continental tournament.

Before then, they need to continue accumulating experience in high-intensity matches at their clubs, especially positioning and recovery when facing quick transitions on defense.

Current data only shows that they are competitive at the Chinese Super League level and cannot directly prove they can also perform for the national team on the international stage.

It took two years for China's national team full-back position to move from "no one available" to "too many options to use."

This change is real, but it is more the result of tactical innovation at club level and diversified youth development paths rather than the output of a single systematic project.

Three different paths have succeeded at the same time. Whether they can go further depends on upcoming international competitions, not Chinese Super League rankings or statistics.
