Guoan’s AFC Champions League Opponent Changes Coach Before Matchday; Former Relegation Coach Takes Charge, Team Could Aim for Away Win _ Mario Silva _ League _ Match

The new AFC Champions League Elite season is about to begin. Beijing Guoan will face eight opponents in total this campaign, and their second-round opponent will be Thai League side Buriram United. Before the new season started, Buriram United suddenly announced the dismissal of head coach Mark Jackson.

Jackson’s departure was indeed quite unexpected. He replaced Osmar Loss as Buriram United’s head coach last October and produced an impressive record in less than a year. Last season, Jackson led the team to the Thai League title, as well as the Thai FA Cup and ASEAN Club Championship titles. The team also reached the East Zone knockout stage of the AFC Champions League Elite and eliminated Johor Darul Ta’zim to advance to the main stage.

Therefore, Buriram United’s sudden coaching change has been difficult to understand. Reports suggest the main issue was related to the squad adjustments and future planning for the new season. Jackson wanted to maintain last season’s core lineup, while the club hoped to upgrade the squad again for both league and AFC Champions League competition. The disagreement between the two sides eventually led to Jackson’s dismissal.

After Jackson left, Buriram United had little time to transition. On September 6 in the opening round of the Thai League, they played away against Sukhothai, with assistant coach Emerson Pereira temporarily in charge. The team won 3-1, and leading scorer Bissoli scored a hat-trick. This also reminded Guoan not to assume the opponent’s strength has declined simply because of a last-minute coaching change.

Recently, Buriram United quickly announced that Portuguese coach Mario Silva would become the team’s new manager. Silva previously coached Porto’s youth teams. In the summer of 2024, he joined Saudi Pro League side Al-Najma and successfully guided the team from the Saudi First Division to the Saudi Pro League in his first season. Last season, Al-Najma performed poorly in the Saudi Pro League and stayed near the bottom of the table for a long period. In February this year, Al-Najma announced Silva’s dismissal, but the team still could not escape difficulties and was eventually relegated at the end of the season.

Unexpectedly, six months after being dismissed, Silva found a new job and became Buriram United’s new head coach. The club chose Silva mainly because his tactical approach emphasizes attacking football, quick transitions between attack and defense, and ground-based combination play, which matches the club’s team-building philosophy.

It is also worth noting that while coaching Al-Najma, Silva strongly pushed for the signing of former Guoan player Guga. After leaving at the end of last season, Guga quickly joined a Saudi Pro League club. Since both are Portuguese, Silva highly valued Guga’s ability, allowing the Portuguese midfielder to receive an important role, but this did not change Al-Najma’s eventual relegation fate.

Silva taking charge of Buriram United also adds another variable to Guoan’s AFC Champions League away match in October. After Silva took over, the team’s tactical style changed noticeably, with a stronger emphasis on ground attacks. However, having just changed coaches, many players will likely be unable to adapt to the new tactical system in a short period of time, which gives Guoan an opportunity to seize and achieve a good result away from home.

However, playing away at Buriram United will not be easy. As last season’s Thai League champions, Buriram United cannot be underestimated. They have performed impressively in the league and possess a very strong attacking force.
