The New Champions League Season Arrives! Special Opening Round Schedule as Debutants Make Their Mark

This week, the highly anticipated Champions League officially gets underway, with many of Europe's top clubs set to appear one after another. The opening round features a special arrangement, with four teams earning the opportunity to make their first appearance, while the number of places for the top five European leagues has decreased by one compared with last season.

This season is the 72nd edition in Champions League history, the 35th since the competition was renamed the UEFA Champions League, and also the third edition using the new 36-team format. Starting this week, the opening league phase will begin in full swing. After eight matches, the top eight teams will advance directly to the round of 16, while teams ranked from ninth to 24th must compete in play-offs for the final eight qualification spots. The two-legged ties will be played on a home-and-away basis.

Under the current rules, 29 of the 36 teams participating in the main competition will qualify directly. The top ten leagues in the European coefficient rankings each receive fixed places. The Premier League, La Liga, Serie A and Bundesliga each have four places, Ligue 1 has three, the Dutch league has two, while lower-ranked leagues such as Portugal, Belgium, the Czech Republic and Turkey each have one. In addition, there are four non-fixed places. Liverpool and Real Betis secured two of the bonus spots, while Sporting CP and Shakhtar Donetsk advanced directly through delayed qualification from Champions League and Europa League title-holder routes without needing to play in the play-offs.

The final seven places were decided through play-offs. Viking, LASK Linz and AEK Athens only needed to take part in one play-off round to qualify. The biggest challenge belonged to Azerbaijan's Sabah Baku, who started from the first qualifying round, eliminated four opponents in succession, and earned their valuable Champions League place after eight difficult matches.

The qualified teams come from 16 different leagues, with 21 clubs representing the top five European leagues. The Premier League and La Liga each have five teams, Serie A and the Bundesliga each have four, and Ligue 1 has three, one fewer than last season. This was mainly because Aston Villa finished fourth in the Premier League, meaning only five English clubs could participate, while Lyon lost to Fenerbahce in the play-offs, leaving Ligue 1 without four representatives once again.

Norway's league has attracted attention, as champions Viking defeated Dinamo Zagreb, while runners-up Bodo/Glimt eliminated Union Saint-Gilloise and NEC Nijmegen. Both teams advanced to the main competition, raising expectations about the resurgence of Nordic football.

It is worth noting that Como from Serie A, Norway's Viking, Azerbaijan's Sabah Baku, and Austria's LASK Linz are all making their first appearances in the Champions League main competition. This highlights the rise of emerging clubs and provides encouragement for smaller and mid-sized teams, aligning with UEFA's strategic goal of promoting broader development.

The opening round of this Champions League season uses a standalone match-week arrangement, with no other cup competitions interfering during the period. The first round consists of three match days, with six games played each day, and each match day has two kick-off windows: 12:45 a.m. and 3:00 a.m. Beijing time. Although few major clubs are involved in the earlier slot, Barcelona will face Feyenoord and Roma will travel to face Fenerbahce, while other classic encounters will take place in the later window.

Several major clashes have already appeared in the opening round, including Real Madrid against Inter Milan and Borussia Dortmund facing Villarreal. Anticipated meetings such as Liverpool against Atletico Madrid and Napoli against Arsenal are also full of suspense. On the third match day, returning Champions League side Manchester United will face debutants Sabah Baku, while Bayern Munich will challenge dark horses Bodo/Glimt.
