French Media: Monaco Survive a Difficult Transfer Window, with Golovin and Other Key Players Staying

According to Foot Mercato, Monaco had originally feared that August would bring constant turmoil. After coming under pressure from DNCG salary restrictions in late spring, the principality club knew it would be closely monitored.

Monaco have generated €106 million from player sales this summer, excluding bonuses, selling players such as Maghnes Akliouche, Bamba and Caio, but the club's management had set a target of reaching €150 million.

In the final stages of the transfer window, Folarin Balogun's €50 million move to Everton fell through, which almost forced Lamine Camara to join Chelsea for a similar fee. Monaco's executives therefore had to look for other solutions in the markets that remained open, such as the already approved loan move of Thilo Kehrer to Ajax. Young midfielder Pape Cabral, who came through Monaco's academy, could also have continued his career at Saudi club Al Ahli, but his transfer, worth around €10 million, ultimately failed to materialize.

As part of this cost-cutting effort, Golovin's future quickly became a focal point. One of the highest-paid players in the squad, the 30-year-old attacking midfielder is under contract until 2029 and had already received a concrete offer from his home country, with only the final few minutes of the Russian transfer window remaining. According to Russian outlet Championat, Spartak Moscow made a move in recent hours, submitting a €19 million offer to Monaco's management for the player who joined Monaco in 2018. Before moving to Monaco, he spent six years with CSKA Moscow. Meanwhile, Zenit St. Petersburg had also been pursuing him for several weeks, but were unsuccessful as well.

However, barring a late change, the Russian international will not leave for now. A Russian source told us that he has provided two assists in three Ligue 1 appearances. Although he is indeed interested in returning to play in Russia, the salaries offered by the clubs are roughly comparable to what he currently earns in the principality and are still not enough to tempt him. More importantly, under Filipe Luís, the Russian No. 10 has rediscovered his form and has also become a key player for the team. Golovin has become an indispensable part of the Brazilian coach's tactical system, shining for a Monaco side that currently sit firmly atop Ligue 1 and have beaten Paris Saint-Germain at the Parc des Princes.

The coaching staff were relieved by the outcome. They had previously feared that the squad would be significantly weakened, but as Filipe Luís enters September, Balogun, Lamine Camara and the Russian midfielder are all still under his management. According to our information, the DNCG will not intervene again in the short term, indicating that the club has done a good job in sporting and financial management. However, from January 1, when the winter transfer window opens, financial pressure will once again force the club to make difficult choices.

Last winter, Monaco had already sold George Ilenikhena to Saudi Arabia for €33 million. Now, Monaco have just recorded consecutive wins over Marseille and Paris FC and will next travel to face Strasbourg on Saturday.
