Recently, according to reports from Beijing Youth Daily Sports and several other media outlets, in order to keep pace with the development of football in Asia and around the world, the Chinese football league authorities are actively exploring a plan to adjust the Chinese Super League to a cross-year season format, in line with the AFC's full implementation of a cross-year AFC Champions League schedule.

It is understood that through its legal department, the Chinese football league authorities invited experts from relevant fields to conduct in-depth research and discussions, and initially formulated a feasibility assessment plan for a cross-year Chinese Super League format. Against this background, considering China's vast territory and major climate differences between the north and south, the authorities have conducted systematic simulations and evaluations of various challenges involved in the reform to ensure the plan is scientific and reasonable.

After comprehensive analysis, the potential benefits of implementing a cross-year season format in the Chinese Super League are considered to outweigh the disadvantages. Although difficulties and challenges may arise during the process, decision-makers need to demonstrate courage and responsibility. This move would not only help the Chinese Super League align with global football but also meet the league's own development needs, making it highly beneficial for the league's long-term development.
It is worth noting that the idea of a cross-year season format proposed by the Chinese football league authorities was not an impulsive decision, but was based on the AFC's adjustment of the AFC Champions League to a cross-year schedule, which has created a clear conflict between the current Chinese Super League calendar and the AFC Champions League schedule. In particular, after the Chinese Super League season ends, some teams participating in the AFC Champions League must continue preparing without entering a real rest period. In addition, training camps in the spring of next year must be brought forward due to AFC Champions League duties, which shortens the winter break for Chinese Super League teams. The lack of a complete winter training period clearly affects competitive form.
The current calendar-year format of the Chinese Super League differs from mainstream European and American leagues, causing player transfer and registration windows to fail to synchronize with the international market. Foreign player recruitment often misses the best opportunities, and domestic players seeking opportunities in Europe face similar difficulties. Meanwhile, as mainstream European and American leagues and leagues in West Asian countries generally adopt cross-year formats, international events such as the World Cup are often held in summer. The current Chinese Super League schedule overlaps with some international events and has also negatively affected commercial operations.
However, if a cross-year season format is actually implemented, northern regions of China often experience severe cold during the depths of winter, and snow and icy weather would pose challenges to the normal operation of matches while also increasing the risk of player injuries. Therefore, northern Chinese Super League clubs urgently need to address winter venue issues and invest significant funds to upgrade facilities, such as installing heated pitches and professional snow removal equipment, which would inevitably lead to a substantial increase in venue maintenance costs.
After learning about the plan, many fans actively shared their views and put forward numerous constructive suggestions. For example, some fans suggested that northern teams host more home matches during spring and autumn, play more away matches in winter, and have a longer winter break. Others proposed establishing northern and southern divisions to complete the regular season before moving on to playoffs. This model could not only expand the number of participating teams and increase the number of matches but also achieve the goal of reforming to a cross-year season format.
