September 4: Officially Confirmed, Elliott Will Wear Valencia's No. 10 Shirt This Season

10 to 20 goals or assists.

This is Elliott's KPI for his year at Valencia. The midfielder, who has made 149 appearances and scored 15 goals for Liverpool in all competitions, has set his standard at starting with double figures.

He arrived in Valencia on September 1 and received the No. 10 shirt at his presentation at the Paterna Sports City. CEO Ron Gourlay accompanied him throughout, but did not speak, only going on stage with him to hold up the new shirt.

Elliott is not simply jumping onto an easy ride.

At the start of the 2026-27 La Liga season, Valencia had one draw and two defeats in their first three matches, scoring one goal and conceding four, sitting 16th in the table.

August 22: a 0-0 home draw with Celta.

August 25: a 0-1 home defeat to Betis.

August 30: a 1-3 away defeat to Deportivo La Coruna, with Sadiq scoring and Tarrega scoring an own goal.

Head coach Corberan is under real pressure. Elliott also said at the presentation: "The last few games have indeed been difficult, and we cannot be affected by outside noise."

He added context to his target himself: "I would say probably between 10 and 20, that is the standard I have set for myself, the total target for goals plus assists."

ESPN made the structure of the deal clear: a straight loan, lasting one season until June 2027, with Valencia having no purchase option.

This means two things:

First, Valencia are taking a low-cost gamble on immediate impact. At the end of the season Elliott will return to Liverpool, and they will not own the player.

Second, Elliott himself has no easy way out. His Liverpool contract runs until 2028, and after returning to Anfield this summer, new manager Iraola's squads for matches against Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest both left him out.

Last season at Villa, he started only once in the Premier League. Villa manager Emery deliberately limited his playing time to avoid triggering the mandatory £35 million purchase clause, and he made only four Premier League appearances with three starts. At the end of the season Emery publicly apologized, saying the situation "made everyone feel embarrassed."

A 23-year-old English midfielder has been loaned out for two consecutive seasons, spending the first at Villa where he was sidelined, and the second arriving in La Liga.

After arriving at Valencia, Elliott spoke frankly in an interview with Marca: "I can play anywhere, as long as I can play football I am happy. But I think playing as an attacking midfielder, the No. 10 role, is where I am most effective and where I can show my potential the most."

This is not just a polite statement. In Corberan's 4-2-3-1 system, the attacking free role is the No. 10, the starting point for the final pass in the attacking third. Valencia's current midfield options include Guido Rodriguez, Pepelu, Ugrinic and Javi Guerra, and they signed holding midfielder Aliou Dieng for free in the summer window—the No. 10 who can carry the ball forward and play through balls between defensive lines is exactly the missing piece.

This is why Valencia were willing to hand the symbolic core No. 10 shirt to a 23-year-old English player on loan.

Elliott told reporters that he decided to call Valencia himself. "I spoke with the coach on the phone, and he told me what he expected from me." He also mentioned speaking with Valencia goalkeeper Mamardashvili before coming: "I told him I was coming to Valencia on holiday, so he could recommend some places for me to go. I think he did not know I might join Valencia until it actually happened."

At the presentation, Elliott was asked how he viewed playing at Mestalla, which is entering its final season.

He answered: "Everything this club represents, it has great qualities. Whether inside the club building or on the training ground, you can feel that traditional football atmosphere. Being able to come here is an achievement for me."

Valencia finished ninth in La Liga last season and did not secure any European competition qualification. Beyond his personal target, Elliott also stated a bigger goal: "I hope I can help Valencia qualify for Europe."

From a start of one draw and two defeats in three matches to finishing in the European qualification places, the road is long. On September 6, Valencia will host Barcelona—this could be the match where Elliott makes his debut.

He said at the presentation: "The past is the past. In two days I have seen what these players can do, and I believe from this weekend we will start proving it."

The No. 10 shirt hangs in the dressing room locker. The 49,430-seat Mestalla is waiting for him to step onto the pitch.
