Another Chinese Super League Team on the Brink of Relegation, Potential Player Exodus Looms

In the 26th round of the Chinese Super League, Qingdao Hainiu lost 1-2 away to Dalian Yingbo, suffering their ninth consecutive defeat. So far, Qingdao Hainiu have accumulated only 14 points in the standings and sit firmly at the bottom of the table, eight points away from safety. With only four rounds remaining in the league, Qingdao Hainiu have almost secured a relegation place.

For Qingdao Hainiu fans, this will be painful news. As the first professional football club in Qingdao, Qingdao Hainiu was founded in 1993 and has spent more than three decades on the Chinese football stage. The club experienced difficult periods from the Chinese Super League to the China League One and China League Two, but later fought back to return to the top division in 2023 in a remarkable turnaround. However, the small club, which has struggled to operate with private funding, is once again facing a relegation crisis.

Under the heavy pressure of the era of big-spending football in recent years, Qingdao Hainiu have continued to struggle, with financial resources far behind fellow Shandong club Shandong Taishan and wealthy teams such as Shanghai Port and Beijing Guoan. However, the small-budget Qingdao Hainiu have not given up their pursuit of sporting achievements. Since returning to the Chinese Super League in 2023, the team successfully avoided relegation for two seasons and produced respectable performances.

However, this season, due to follow-up disciplinary actions related to league cases, Qingdao Hainiu and eight other Chinese Super League clubs received varying point deductions at the start of the campaign. Qingdao Hainiu began the league with a disadvantage of minus seven points, which was a major setback for a team already limited in strength. Under such circumstances, their hopes of completing a comeback to avoid relegation have become extremely slim.

In addition, Hainiu failed to retain coach Li Xiaopeng, who guided the team to safety last season, and instead chose to appoint foreign coach Ristic, a decision widely considered a mistake. Although Ristic's coaching philosophy is relatively advanced, he appeared to lack experience in managing a less-resourceful squad, leading to the team's poor results this season and its slide into the relegation battle.

Although relegation appears almost certain, many capable players in the squad have attracted attention from other Chinese Super League clubs, including foreign players Yeboah and Ejuema, as well as promising domestic young talents such as Jin Yonghao, Li Suda, Gong Ruicong and Kuang Zhaolei. Among them, Ghana international Yeboah is particularly noteworthy. He has performed impressively this season, scoring seven goals, and with his contract expiring at the end of the year, he is set to become a free agent and a major target in the transfer market.
