September 9: Mourinho Explains Arda Guler Substitution: He Was the Best, but Yellow Card Risk Forced Change

Real Madrid lost 0-1 to Betis, with Guler playing 64 minutes before being substituted. He created seven scoring chances and recovered possession five times, standing out as the team's brightest performer. Substitute Diomande is the 19-year-old Ivorian winger signed this summer for a deal worth up to €140 million.

In the 15th minute, Mbappe sent a chipped pass and Guler beat the offside trap before passing across to Vinicius. Vinicius' tight-angle shot hit the post. Guler showed frustration, Vinicius held his head, and Mourinho watched from the sideline.

Guler repeatedly threatened from the right side in the first half, using his acceleration, cutting inside and passing. His key passes created chances for Bellingham, Mbappe and set-piece situations.

Guler received a yellow card in stoppage time. Mourinho said he did not understand it because Guler had played very well and was punished for only a minor foul.

In the 53rd minute, Guler fouled Roca from behind and risked a second yellow card. The referee did not send him off, but Guler became more cautious in challenges afterward.

Mourinho said replacing Arda was extremely difficult because he was playing very well, but he felt Betis would target him and that he could receive a second yellow. He also said Betis players were smarter at using match situations.

The statistics did not favor the substitution. In 64 minutes, Guler had 61 touches, completed 36 of 40 passes, made seven key passes, completed five of seven crosses and six of eight long balls, and recovered possession five times.

Mbappe wasted major chances, including a missed opportunity in the 43rd minute and a stoppage-time penalty saved by Valles. Guler created chances but could not turn them into goals.

Betis scored on a counterattack after Real Madrid pushed forward. After Guler left, Madrid had fewer right-side connections, and Diomande did not create many direct combinations with Mbappe and Bellingham.

This was not the first similar substitution. Against Espanyol in the first La Liga match, Guler assisted Bellingham and was also replaced by Diomande in the 64th minute.

Madrid's squad structure explains the competition on the right. Mbappe, Vinicius, Bellingham and Valverde are fixed in their roles, leaving the right side as a choice between Guler and Diomande.

After Guler's first yellow card and the missed second-yellow incident, keeping him on the pitch carried risk. Substituting him was a way to avoid playing with ten men.

However, while trailing 0-1 and struggling to finish chances, removing the team's biggest creator hurt attacking organization. Mourinho admitted the decision might not have been fair.

Guler quietly watched from the bench. After the 70th minute, Madrid lost the rhythm of right-side combinations and relied more on Diomande's individual runs.

Mourinho also received a yellow card after protesting from the sideline. He said he reacted after seeing a Betis player fall near the bench but believed the situation was exaggerated.

Madrid's right side still needs adjustment. Diomande has physical ability, one-on-one strength and speed, but his reading of the game and passing threat differ from Guler's.

The Espanyol substitution came while Madrid were ahead and protecting energy, while the Betis substitution happened at 0-0 because of yellow-card concerns.

Betis did more than defend. They targeted Guler physically from the left side. His five recoveries showed defensive effort but also reflected the increased foul risk.

Guler created a Bellingham header chance from a corner and also attempted layoffs and through balls. He is not only a creative passer, which is why Mourinho trusted him.

When the substitution board was raised, Madrid supporters booed the timing rather than Guler himself. Guler handed over his equipment and watched from the bench.

The 'Guler dilemma' comes from three factors: yellow-card risk, leading the team in chances created, and giving the new signing minutes. Mourinho protected him but sacrificed right-side creativity.

Diomande's sample size is still small, so he cannot be judged from one match. With Guler, Madrid have secondary organization on the right; without him, they rely more on individual attacks.

Mourinho did not blame Diomande or criticize Guler's defending. He focused on the yellow card, Betis' intelligence and Madrid's naivety. Future adjustments are needed to reduce Guler's foul risk.
