September 7: Kane's Late Winner Denied by Karius as Bayern's Three-Game Winning Run Ends

Veltins Arena, Schalke 04's home stadium, hosted a Bundesliga second-round highlight match in the early hours of September 6, as defending champions Bayern Munich visited promoted side Schalke 04. The match ended 0-0.

In the 87th minute, Kane received the ball outside the box and fired a powerful shot toward the top-left corner. Schalke goalkeeper Karius made a spectacular save and tipped it over the bar. Kane was left stunned, reflecting Bayern's early-season problem of creating chances but failing to score.

Bayern recorded 15 shots, including six clear scoring chances, but could not find the net. Their three-game winning streak at the start of the season ended, and after two Bundesliga rounds they had four points, dropping from first to fourth place.

Although the result disappointed Bayern, their performance was not poor. They controlled the first half with nearly 80 percent possession. In the 11th minute Kimmich created a chance for Pavlovic and Nathaniel Brown's close-range effort was saved by Karius. In the 41st minute Brown set up Luis Diaz for a one-on-one chance, but Diaz shot over. Kompany changed the lineup at halftime and brought on Kane.

Bayern continued attacking after the break. In the 53rd minute Diaz rounded Karius but Schalke's defender cleared the ball off the line. In the 57th minute Olise and Musiala entered. Olise's shot was saved in the 60th minute, Laimer hit the side netting in the 63rd, and Bischoff's deflected shot went just wide in the 82nd.

Kane's stunning long-range effort in the 87th minute was again denied by Karius. After the final whistle Bayern players protested the result, but despite 15 shots, six major chances and heavy possession, the failure to score was mainly their own issue.

The main figure of the match was Schalke goalkeeper Loris Karius. Days earlier he had been criticized for mistakes against Augsburg, but against Bayern he made five saves and kept a clean sheet. In the official post-match vote, he was named player of the match with 68 percent of the votes.

Schalke returned to the Bundesliga after 1,191 days and were promoted as Bundesliga 2 champions last season. After losing 3-0 to Augsburg in the opening round, they drew with Bayern at home, earning their first point after promotion and ending Bayern's 10-game Bundesliga losing streak and 12-game winning streak in all competitions against them.

Bayern also faced scheduling challenges. In September they would play league, Champions League and German Cup matches within 16 days. Neuer returned after resting in the German Cup. Musiala had previous health concerns and Gnabry was injured. Therefore Kane, Olise and Musiala started on the bench, while Seppari made his first Bundesliga start and Brown played as an attacking midfielder.

The rotation was understandable, but the second-half result was puzzling. Kane, Olise and Musiala joined Diaz to give Bayern four attackers valued above 100 million, yet they still failed to score in nearly 40 minutes. Diaz missed chances, Olise was denied, Laimer and Bischoff failed to convert, and Kane's long shot was saved by Karius.

Notably, Schalke's center-backs facing Bayern's attack were Upamecano and Jonathan Tah—both Bayern players. Schalke's defenders inside the box included players from their second-tier squad such as Kurucay and Katic, yet they still held off Bayern's long attack.

In the standings, Bayern had four points from one win and one draw after two rounds and ranked fourth. Freiburg were first, Borussia Dortmund second and Elversberg third. Schalke earned their first point since returning to the Bundesliga and ranked 14th.

At 3:00 a.m. on September 11, Bayern will host Norwegian side Bodo/Glimt at the Allianz Arena in the opening round of the new Champions League season. The opponent had an impressive European campaign last season, beating Manchester City, Atletico Madrid and eliminating Inter Milan to reach the last 16.
