Another Chinese Super League Team Faces Relegation! Transfer Market Set to Open, African Star Could Become Highly Sought After

In the 26th round of the Chinese Super League, Qingdao Hainiu, who fielded only two foreign players, lost 1-2 away to Dalian Yingbo and suffered their ninth consecutive defeat. Qingdao Hainiu currently have only 14 points in the standings and remain at the bottom of the table, eight points away from escaping the relegation zone. With only four rounds left in the league, Qingdao Hainiu have almost secured a relegation spot.

For many loyal Qingdao Hainiu supporters, another relegation to the China League One would certainly be disappointing news. As the first professional football club in Qingdao, the long-established club has experienced more than three decades of ups and downs in Chinese football since its founding in 1993. From relegation from the CSL to the China League One and China League Two, to fighting back and returning to the top division in 2023, Qingdao Hainiu's persistence has been commendable.

Unfortunately, Qingdao Hainiu, a small and medium-sized club that has relied on private capital to maintain operations, has continued to persevere despite experiencing the downturn of the era of big-spending football. The difficulties involved are likely best understood by the investors behind the club. Although its financial strength cannot compare with wealthy clubs from the same province such as Shandong Taishan, Haigang and Guoan, Qingdao Hainiu have not abandoned their pursuit of sporting achievements. After returning to the CSL in 2023, the team successfully avoided relegation without much suspense for two consecutive seasons.

This season, nine CSL clubs including Qingdao Hainiu were affected by historical match-fixing, gambling and corruption cases and received point deductions of varying degrees. Qingdao Hainiu started the season with -7 points, which was a major setback for a team that already lacked strength and left them with almost no chance of a comeback. In addition, the club failed to retain Li Xiaopeng, who helped the team avoid relegation last season, and instead hired foreign coach Ristic, which was considered a major mistake. Although Ristic's coaching philosophy is advanced, he was apparently insufficiently prepared for the relegation battle of a modestly resourced team, resulting in repeated defeats and leaving the club trapped in a relegation fight.

Although Hainiu's relegation is almost certain, several capable players in the squad have still attracted attention from other CSL teams. These include foreign players such as Ye Bояa and Ejuma, as well as domestic young talents including Jin Yonghao, Li Suda, Gong Ruicong and Kuang Zhaolei, all of whom are potential transfer targets.
