Moyes: Balogun medical issue was nobody's fault, football is often like this

Moyes admitted that he had hoped to complete more signings before the transfer deadline, but he can now only “accept the various disappointments.”

Everton had originally pursued Monaco forward Folarin Balogun. After the 25-year-old completed his medical at Everton's Finch Farm training ground, the deal eventually collapsed. The United States international only became Everton's late-window target after Guinea-Bissau forward Beto completed a permanent transfer to Serie A side Fiorentina.

The Toffees also tried to pursue Manchester United forward Joshua Zirkzee and Aston Villa striker Tammy Abraham, but they were unable to convince either player to join.

The team signed Jack Grealish on a season-long loan from Manchester City; however, attacking player Iliman Ndiaye moved to Manchester City.

“Not completing more signings, and the situation ultimately not developing as we expected, has left me disappointed,” Moyes said.

“In football, sometimes you have to accept disappointment and move forward, and that is what we will do.”

Problems during Balogun's medical led Everton and Monaco to reopen talks over the original £40 million transfer agreement.

Before the transfer window closed at 23:00 British Summer Time, the two clubs signed a memorandum of understanding to gain extra time to complete the transfer. However, Balogun changed his mind and chose to withdraw from the deal.

“It is nobody's fault. Things like this happen in football; the player had an issue during the medical, and that is all it was,” Moyes added.

“There is no other hidden story behind it. That is simply the fact.”

Ndiaye made 67 Premier League appearances for the Toffees, scoring 15 goals and providing four assists. Moyes said one reason for selling the player was to raise funds for new signings.

“At that time, we needed to bring some money back in,” Moyes said.

“We lost Iliman Ndiaye, and we absolutely did not want to let him go. But when a club like Manchester City comes calling, many things are beyond your control.”

“Some things did not go as planned, and there are some areas where we could have done better. Ultimately, we did not want to lose several players, but for practical reasons, these things still happened.”
