Manchester United were linked with several left-backs this summer, but ultimately failed to sign any of them. According to The Athletic, Manchester United had listed Newcastle's Lewis Hall as one of their priority targets, but moved too late. According to Fabrizio Romano, Manchester United also considered Maatsen as an option.

Villa's stance: not for sale

Romano's report on August 31 was clear: Aston Villa view Maatsen as a key player, he is not for sale, and they will not sell him this summer. Manchester United are among the interested clubs, but Villa will not let Maatsen leave, and the decision has been made.

Football Insider noted that Maatsen is currently under contract with Villa until 2030, meaning the club already has little pressure to sell. However, they still plan to offer him a new deal in order to fend off interest from Manchester United or any other club.
