Sevilla Forward Stassin: I Want to Help the Team Return to European Competition

Stassin gave his first interview to Sevilla's official club media. He said: “I am very happy and excited to start this new challenge in Spain. It is a completely new adventure for me, and it is at a great club.” The Belgian forward joined from Saint-Etienne on loan with a purchase option. The 21-year-old Stassin is a Belgium international who has already shown his ability in Ligue 1.

Stassin said: “I am a number 9. I like scoring goals, but I also like getting involved in team play. I like linking up and making runs. I do not mind providing assists either. As long as the team can win, we can enjoy ourselves on the pitch.” Head coach Luis Garcia Plaza is considering using a two-striker system after his arrival, and Stassin said: “I have played with two strikers and I have also played as a lone striker, so I can adapt to the coach’s requirements. I prefer to be the furthest player forward and let the wingers provide support from both sides, but playing with another striker is also completely fine.”

Stassin already knows his new attacking teammate Robi Uldri: “I know a little about him because he previously played for Anderlecht. A few friends sent me messages and talked about him.” Stassin said he is ready to play away against Espanyol this Sunday. Speaking about Sevilla, he said: “I know this is a very big club that has won the Europa League many times. Everyone has talked about it. After arriving here, I have also seen that this is a big club, with excellent fans and a very beautiful city. People are also really friendly.”

Stassin added: “I hope to rediscover the form I had in France and in Ligue 1, and I also hope to help Sevilla play in European competitions again, enjoy matches, score goals, win games and find my good feeling again.” He also spoke about his admiration for La Liga: “I like the style of La Liga. It focuses on playing football and possession, with fewer physical battles and fewer long balls. It is a league I have always liked. I have always said that one day I want to play in Spain.”

His compatriot and former Sevilla player Lukebakio had previously introduced the club to him: “When I went to the national team, he was still in the youth team, so we would meet and he would talk with me. He always told me: ‘Come on, this is a good club for you. I believe you will improve and score goals.’ Lukebakio is a great guy.”

Finally, Stassin talked about his two favorite players: “Lewandowski and Benzema are both number 9s I really like. I prefer central strikers rather than wingers, because obviously I am a forward. However, I really like the way Benzema plays, and I also like Lewandowski’s style. They are both great players.”
